Abstract

This paper presents an autonomous vehicle which follows by detecting the tail lamps of the front vehicle. The capability of vehicle following enhances the safety level of autonomous driving, especially at night time or in bad weather. From the locations of the two tail lamps on the image frame, the distance to the front vehicle can be measured as well as the required steering angle. The authors describe vehicle following experiments which have been conducted on a test ground at 30km/hr.
