Abstract

Pedestrian fatality is the third most frequent cause of child deaths in the USA. The accident rate could be decreased using intelligent transport systems (ITS) and road safety education for both drivers and children. Vehicle speed is the critical factor in accidents and speed reduction in high-risk environments is the only certain method for reducing the probability of death or serious injury. Christchurch in New Zealand has implemented a programme called Safe Routes To School (SRTS), which incorporates the use of education programmes, improved crossing design, new crossing point signs and active school zone speed limit signs using light emitting diode (LED) technology developed by High Technology Systems. The active signage approach was well received by drivers and the local community and was shown to be more effective than the traditional static signage approach.
