Abstract

A detailed evaluation of the bus and carpool lane installed on the Banfield Freeway in Oregon is presented. The Banfield Freeway was modified from a four-lane divided facility to a six-lane divided freeway with the median lane reserved for carpools and buses during peak hours. The high occupancy vehicle lanes impact on traffic flow, safety, modal shift, air quality, fuel savings and public attitude are discussed.
