We write in response to an article by Nitz [Nitz J.C. Evidence from a cohort of able bodied adults to support the need for driver training for motorized scooters before community participation. Patient Educ Couns 2008;70:276–80.] which involved reporting of a driver competency test for new users of motorized scooters. We applaud the concept of the study which examines skill development, proficiency and safety for new scooter users. We also recognize that subsequent studies will be required and conducted in due course, building on this important first study. However, we disagree with the author’s recommendation that a test of driver competency should be taken and passed by all motorized scooter and wheelchair users prior to unrestricted road use. The recommendations go beyond the scope of the study which involved 50 healthy adults, scooters but not electric wheelchairs, and a test with unknown psychometric properties. A discussion of study limitations is warranted. (Author/publisher)
