The evolution of Bedfordshire County Council's pavement condition survey is traced. An earlier system was replaced by the ROADFAX pavement management system. The advantages of this system are listed. Data from machine surveys including SCRIM (Sideways force Coefficient Routine Investigation Machine), Deflectograph and Bump Integrator were incorporated and the programme relied on heavily for decisions on the allocation of funds. Linkage to the WINGS Geographical Information System further improved the system. Details are given of the hardware used, the scale of maps and the benefits brought by the system.
