Abstract

Within the framework of the implementation of the new Dutch National Traffic and Transport Plan 2001- 2020 (NVVP), forecasts of freight traffic at the local and regional level have increased in importance. In practice, freight trip generation is hardly understood, however, and very little research has been done to uncover the relationships between land use by industry and the resulting freight traffic. This paper describes a recent pragmatic attempt to build a freight trip generation model which takes into account variations between industry sectors. The authors provide results from an analysis of the Dutch and US literature, describe the shipper survey approach to find out more about trip generation and report on the results of their model estimates.
