Abstract

The rapid growth of the number of vans and the increase in traffic casualties and emissions that are related to these vehicles is of growing concern for policymakers in the Netherlands and Europe. Fleet managers are confronted with the relative high cost of vans (fuel, maintenance, and damage). Speed limiters could assist the drivers to achieve and maintain an economic driving style. Under the direction of Novem, a large-scale field test was set up in which 16 companies, with a total of 177 vans and 30 trucks between 3,5 and 12 ton, participated. In the test the effects of speed limiters were assessed on fuel consumption, maintenance costs, damage costs and speed tickets. In addition the perception of speed limiters by the chauffeurs and fleet managers was evaluated. (Author/publisher)
