Abstract

This book explores the concept of ‘behavioural adaptation’ among road users, which refers to the collection of unintended behaviours that follows the introduction of changes to the road transport system. Despite it being an accepted construct in the fields of traffic and transport psychology, the precise nature of behavioural adaptation, including its causes and consequences, has not yet been established within the road safety community. While behavioural adaptation has been observed as a con-sequence of many road safety interventions in the areas of education, engineering, and enforcement, and its manifestation in response to a novel road safety intervention is often predictable, designers and policymakers do not always consider it in the early stages of vehicle or system design. This situation leaves a significant area of untapped road safety potential that could, if addressed before a road safety counter-measure were introduced, improve safety outcomes and significantly reduce costs.
