Abstract

The aim of this paper is to explain the structure and responsibilities of the funding body for much of the research described in these proceedings, and to describe the ways in which research findings are disseminated and implemented. The paper details existing road safety targets for casualty reduction and charts progress towards meeting these targets. Examples of measures which have been implemented, and which are contributing to reduction in casualties, are also provided. The author outlines the main policy themes of the DETR's Road Safety Division (RSD) programme, indicates how research findings are communicated to policy staff, and describes progress in implementing the Current RSD safety programme.
