Abstract

Appropriate use of vehicle lights while driving and when parked is described for the UK. Side lights or dipped headlights should be used when the sun is low in the sky so that the vehicle shows up if it is silhouetted. They should also be used in shady areas or whenever visibility is impaired by adverse weather conditions. Misuse of fog lamps (when visibility exceeds 100 m) and correct use of hazard lamps are described. A warning is given of the dangers of misinterpretation of other drivers signalling by flashing their headlamps. It is the driver's responsibility to ensure that it is safe for them to proceed.
