Abstract

On October 5-6, 1992 a Nordic seminar was held in Esbo, Finland, with the title "Pavement Technology and Pavement Surface-Influences on Traffic and Environment". A major part of the presentations concerned the influence of different surface properties on road user costs and the environment. The condition of the pavement surface influences not only traffic safety but also has consequences on speeds, vehicle costs, lateral position of vehicles, noise, pollution, wear etc. The knowledge of these issues has increased due to better methods for measurements of road characteristics. One of the papers concerned road surface measurement. Another aspect treated at the seminar concerns the influence of traffic on pavement deterioration. Tyres, tyre pressure and suspension systems, mainly for heavy vehicles, can be very decisive for pavement wear. The lateral position of vehicles can be influenced through center and edge line markings as well as lane width and may be important for pavement wear. Work on European standardization within CEN might, in the future, greatly influence the design of pavements and pavement management. The panel discussion started with short, prepared talks on the subject "Which factors should be included in PM-systems and how should they be weighted?". The following discussion was very short, due to lack of time. The seminar ended with a study tour to one of the test sites of the Finnish ASTO project.
