This policy plan of the Directorate-General for Freight Transport of the Ministry of Transport describes policy activities with respect to developing road safety policy for road freight transport for the period 2001-2006. Calculations by the Netherlands Economic Institute (NEI) show that, the road safety of freight transport will improve less quickly than that of other traffic, even when the activities proposed in the policy plan are completely implemented. Therefore, road safety policy for road freight transport should be more intensified than is described in the policy plan. The policy activities presented in the policy plan are divided into four parts: (1) activities aimed at improving the safety of lorries and delivery vans; (2) activities directed at reducing safety risks in road freight transport; (3) activities aimed at safely using transport concepts; and (4) embedding, testing, and further development of policy. The various projects are described per activity.
