Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of the transport situation in Belgium. Transport determinants are examined including a) geography, b) population, c) education and d) the economy. The transportation system is described including a) the structure of the public transport system, b) car ownership and use, c) modal split, d) urban and regional transport and e) interurban transport. Travel patterns are described including a) home to work, b) home to school and c) congestion patterns. Belgium's policy making structure is described and its particular concerns outlined.
