Abstract

This proceedings contains the introductory reports and summary of discussions for the 17th International Symposium on Transport Economics and Policy, held in Berlin on 25-27 October 2006. The creation of the new International Transport Forum was in some ways a response to current challenges in the transport sector, which are increasingly rooted in globalisation. ThisSymposium gave an insight into overall trends in the economy and their impacts on the transport sector. A central idea from the keynote speech was that it was possible to use transport to spread the advantages of economicdevelopment and globalisation by increasing trade and substantially reducing CO<sub2> emissions. The price we pay to take firm action now on reducing emissions would be far less than the price of taking no action. The topics under discussion were split into sections as follows: Data and trends;Globalisation and transport sector development; Transport policy and regional integration; Trade and infrastructure; and International transport and domestic policy.
