A literature review and discussions with highway and transportation officials in several states provided information on issues relating to the planning, safety, and traffic control aspects of night maintenance and construction activities, and their advantages and disadMvantages. The information was used to develop general guidelines for nighttime maintenance and construction work. Although there are many potential disadvantages to working at night, it is believed that experience, proper planning, anMEd attention to workmen and motorist safety make the night alternative feasible for selected work.(A).
