Abstract

ITS technologies have proven benefits to all size cities. These technologies are highly effective in managing traffic and improving safety. Small to medium size cities should take advantage of the ITS opportunities through funds being allocated by the federal and state governments, and leveraging their local funds to achieve higher benefit margins. Small cities can be successful in ITS implementation through identification of needs, deciding priorities, securing funds and effectively managing deployment. Small and medium size cities within metropolitan areas have a unique opportunity to apply ITS. This opportunity includes providing linkages with neighboring agencies, and implementing multi-jurisdictional projects that provide benefits to commuters and travelers. In this way, the typical hindrance of cross boundary jurisdictions will be alleviated. (A*)
