Abstract

The Netherlands Railways (NS) commissioned MuConsult to analyze the accessibility profile of four resorts. The research will take place in the second part of 1992. The aim is to analyze how accessible people think the resorts are, both by car and by public transit. This should identify the most important misconceptions about accessibility. It is expected that four clusters of individuals can be identified: (1) individuals who can reasonably estimate the real time, costs etc. which are needed to get somewhere; (2) individuals who cannot do this and overestimate the costs and time needed by public transit; (3) individuals who cannot use one of the alternative means of transport because of some kind of constraint; and (4) individuals who simply do not know the alternatives available or - on subjective grounds - do not accept the alternative transport mode. If the size and characteristics of different groups are known, this may be helpful in shifting the modal split between car and public transit in the direction of the public transit by marketing means or governmental measures.
