Abstract

Urbanisation and mobility are much related to each other. Spatial developments have a great influence on the demand and load of the infrastructure for the different transport modes. Therefore, a good attuning of the planning of the environment and the infrastructure is important for an effectice traffic and transport policy. Till now on emphasis is given to the policy of vicinity in the urbanisation policy. To keep the transfers as short as possible and to improve public and slow transport, the new urban extensions are planned as close as possible to the existing urban areas. But good and nearby locations are in short supply. These considerations of capacity and selectivity require a more integrated vision on the attuning of the infrastructure and environmental planning for the different levels and parts of the Ring of Cities in the central part of the Netherlands. A literature study has been made and a number of planning dimensions are identified, which are characteristic for the effects of some designs of urbanization on the nature and magnitude of the transport patterns.
