Abstract

Elements of traffic systems which have a smaller capacity than their approaches are defined as bottle-necks. In this paper local (road intersections, narrow roundabouts, freeway entrances) and sectional bottle-necks (tunnels, up-grades, narrow bridges) are investigated. Some theories described traffic flow at bottle-necks are explained. Also the question is discussed whether traffic control will increase bottle-neck capacities.
