Abstract

This short article describes the BEVEI (BEssere VErkehrs-Informationen) system which is on trial in the Bundesland of Northrhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is based on a system which automatically surveys traffic density over 500 kms of highways in the Rhine-Ruhr area. ALERT C-coded real time travel information is transmitted via RDS-TMC. Brief details are provided of: a) the project partners and the means of financing; b) the project area; and c) methods for incident detection and location (via the ALERT (Advice and problem Location for European Road Traffic) project). Brief details of the field trial validating whether the system actually worked are also presented.
