Abstract

This report provides best practice recommendations in variable speed limit (VSL) design and operational principles for agencies and practitioners. This report was developed following consultation with practitioners, a comprehensive literature review and a user comprehension study conducted in four Australian capital cities. This report covers best practices for general VSL applications including purposes of VSL installation, VSL operational principles, VSL signage display and placement, incorporation with lane control signs (LCS), and future research areas.
