Abstract

This paper describes the results of the Dutch Institute of Engineers KIvI-Contest "Woonwens - Verkeerswens", about ideas for redevelopment of 1900-1970 estates, residential areas and quarters. The contributions emphasized the importance of coordinating traffic engineering, town planning, architecture, sociology and government. Contestants submitted plans based on new traffic measures and more specifically designed public spaces, and they were required to produce low cost plans. The contest organizers recommended that multi-disciplined teams could better deal with these complex problems. The contest results show that prewar and postwar build-up areas and quarters have characteristic problems and possibilities and, thus, produce different design ideas. (Author/publisher)
