Abstract

Knooppunt Arnhem-Nijmegen (KAN) is doing well from an economic point of view, but the environmental development is going faster than the development of the traffic system This means a serious threat to the road safety and livability in the KAN-region. Due to the presence of many rivers in the area, there are little alternative routes in case of congestion. This is also the reason that the different authorities that manage their own road network depend on each other. Therefore five parties (i.e. the KAN, the Province of Gelderland, the municipalities Nijmegen and Arnhem and Rijkswaterstaat directie Oost-Nederland) have taken the initiative to start the project Beter Bereikbaar KAN! In this unique project, twenty-three parties take care of the accessibility problems together. They search for solutions within their own and the other road networks, taking into account the policy assumptions of the different authorities. The well known bottlenecks in the region are put aside and are being looked at later on in the process. The parties have worked according to the AVB-method. This method has been used as a stepping stone for an intense and interactive process with many workshops. At several points there has been approval at managerial level. The process has resulted in a set of rules which describe haw to regulate the traffic and which measures are promising to solve the bottlenecks in the region. (Author/publisher)
