In addition to other quality characteristics, the reliability of travel modes is thought to play a relevant role in the travel mode choice process and in the travel behaviour of travellers. However, surprisingly little appears to be known regarding this subject from the existing literature. Against this background, a study is conducted to get more insight in the role of reliability. The first phases of the project consist of defining the concept of reliability and the formulation of a theoretical framework. These phases are discussed. (A)
