Abstract

The term SUPERPAVE was coined to signify the integration of performance - based specifications, test methods, equipment, testing protocols and a mixture design system. As a result SUPERPAVE became the ultimate final product of the SHRP asphalt research program. The products address the following distresses for dense graded asphalt mixtures: (1) permanent deformation; (2) fatigue cracking; and (3) low temperature cracking. The individual final products that are presented in this paper are: (1) a performance-based specification for asphalt binders complete with supporting tests; (2) a performance-based specification for asphalt aggregate mixtures complete with supporting tests and performance prediction models; prediction models; (3) a mixture design and analysis system incorporating the asphalt binder specification and the asphalt mixture specification; (4) a protocol to evaluate modified asphalt binder; and (5) a SUPERPAVE software support system.
