Abstract

A motorway seems to be simply a means of getting lorries and cars from one place to another at a swift and constant speed, without the delays and dangers that same level junctions or traffic lights can bring. But as the examples taken in this report suggest, more speed and safety are not in themselves the end of the benefits. There are still gaps in the British motorway network but there is a willingness to provide better roads for a better economy.
