Abstract

Maintenance of precision-built structures and the engineering knowledge and manpower involved are discussed. The challenge facing the maintenance engineer is that of achieving at least as much engineering perfection in his everyday work as the materials, traffic and other design and construction oriented fields are trying to achieve. It is recommended that funds should be made available for more research on proper maintenance since this investment will pay dividends in providing safe and aesthetically acceptable roads maintained by better use of manpower and machinery.
