Abstract

The survey of bicycle-helmet use is carried out every year, in April and May, by suitably trained bfu personnel. Details of between 6500 and 7000 cyclists are recorded at 67 observation points throughout Switzerland. Four purposes for the bicycle trip are distinguished: cycling to work, to the shops, and to school, as well as for recreation. In addition to helmet use, purpose of the trip, and the region, details are also collected about the type of bicycle used, as well as the rider’s age and gender. The calculation of the proportion of helmet wearers takes into account the population in the particular Swiss language region, plus distance travelled for cycling purpose. (Author/publisher)
