Abstract

The weight of a bicycle is the prime consideration in determining pedalling effort. However, there are other factors whose effect on pedalling effort are equal to or greater than that of weight. A comprehensive analytical formulation of bicycle speed and power input which includes the effect of mechanical friction, tyre rolling resistance, bicycle weight, aerodynamic drag, and road grade is given.
