Abstract

The 1989 bicycle helmet surveys of primary and secondary school children cycling to /from school showed that the helmet wearing rates of primary school students have increased to 73.8% in the metropolitan area, and to 56.2% in the regional centres. In both the metropolitan and country areas, footpath cyclists of all ages have lower helmet wearing rates than cyclists on roads. The helmet wearing rates for commuter cyclists increased to 48.8% in the metropolitan area and to 11.7% in the regional centres.
