Abstract

The key finding from the most studies of bicycle route choice is that surface roughness is the most important single factor. The effective construction and maintenance of cycleways in a suitable condition to ensure their continued use by bicyclists requires both the operational development of a bicycle roughness meter and special studies of the role of surface condition and other factors on bicyclist route choice.
