Abstract

40% of bicyclist casualties (both admitted and treated at hospital) occur on road. 70-80% of bicycle crashes do not involve motorvehicles. Twice as many on road bicyclist casualties occur at intersections than would be expected compared with all road casualties. For children, careless riding is an important factor, and almost half the crashes occurred at weekends. Head injury is the major cause of injury for both fatality and severely injured bicyclists.
