Abstract

A general study of the efficiency, usage and safety of the bicycle as a mode of transport is presented. It summarizes and reviews existing knowledge from the Irish aspect. The usage of bicycles in Ireland will increase, and many believe that usage will increase significantly if the problem of safety arising from the speed differential between cyclists and motor vehicles are satisfactorily resolved. This and other aspects of the safety problem are discussed.
