Abstract

Bicycle usage should be encouraged as an energy conservation measure; the bicycle is a viable alternative mode of travel for journeys up to 3 miles for work trips and up to 2 miles for school trips. A research on pedal cyclist safety was carried out in Galway City, Ireland. The results are classified under three headings, namely traffic accidents, vehicle kilometres by mode of travel and cycle routes. Suggestions on cycle routes for this city are presented.
