Abstract

This is an informative report on the improvement of cycling conditions in urban areas. Its main purpose is to help communities in planning and carrying out measures concerning bicycle traffic. At the same time an attempt has been made to form the report so as to be useful to all who are interested in the use of the bicycle in city traffic. The report begins with a summary of today's cycling situation and problems together with information and data concerning bicycle traffic. Also included is a description of the various problems. The chapter "planning for bicycle traffic" discusses the functional design of bicycle path networks. One of the aspects presented here is a system for the classification of safety standards for crossing points and connecting lines for different links in the network. Questions regarding laws and regulations are dealt with in a special chapter. A great deal of attention is given to the problems of technical implementation. This section is richly illustrated with examples of solutions especially in regard to larger more complex crossing point. The report concludes with a presentation of the treatment of bicycle traffic questions within the framework of community planning and decision making processes.
