Abstract

In the Netherlands, the bicycle is extremely populair: nearly everyone has one and a great many people use it daily. All in all, the Dutch use their bicycles for 30 % of all movements. This means the bicycle comes second as a mode of transport, following the car but preceding the train. This does not mean, however, that the bicycle's possibilities are exhausted. The opinion exists that there are yet opportunities in abundance for a more intensive use of the bicycle, possibly in combination with public transport. Last year, the Department of Transport submitted these possibilities in the 'Bicycle Master Plan'. The brochure is a summary of this program.
