Abstract

In response to increased bicycle usage in recent years many cities have built extensive bikeway systems. Cyclists' evaluations of these facilities were sought in a national survey of bicyclists both on and off bikeways. Interview data from cyclists on bikeways show that cyclists feel safer on bikeways than on city streets. Cyclists also reported common design deficiencies in bikeways.
