Abstract

A theoretical evaluation of potentials for the decrease of highway deaths and injuries through use of improved occupant restraints together with hybrid vehicle front end designs, has been made. The hybrid front end consists of short stroke, self force regulating hydraulic cylinder in tandem arrangement with crushable vehicle structure. Design approaches are presented which indicates potential for reducing crush in small cars, when colliding with bigger cars.
