Abstract

Description of the investigations following an accident with a BART train caused by a failure in a crystal oscillator from the automatic speed control. The Post report has shown the system to be not completely safe and foolproof. Some potentially unsafe conditions and chances were identified in a Battelle report, which were caused by simultaneous multiple circuit failures of the train detection system. Hearings on a number of failures herein are reported. It is concluded that for full operation the control system has to be modified and re-designed in order to give full passenger safety.
