Abstract

'Binder characterization and evaluation Volume 4: test methods' describes the development of test methods for the characterization of asphalt cement. These methods may be used in specifications and for developing correlations between physical and chemical properties. To understand how the properties of asphalt cement and asphalt concrete mixture relate to one another, fundamental material properties expressed in engieering units were required. This information was used to develop models that relate the properties of asphalt cement to mixture properties and, in turn, to pavement performance. A method for the extraction and recovery of asphalt binder from asphalt mixes is also included. model and predictive capability constitute the major portion of volume 1 (ST 941577). The chemical studies and their implications constitute volume 2 (ST 940379). Physical property and field validation studies constitute volume 3 (ST 941188), and volume 4 (ST 941578) contains detailed descriptions of techniques, both established and newly developed, used throughout SHRP Project A-002A.
