Abstract

The Medical and Psychological test Assessment (MPA) system used in Germany to screen a drink driving offender trying to regain a driving licence is outlined. Disadvantages to this system are considered. The present situation with regard to the use of alcohol markers as part of the MPA test is described. A comparison is made of different markers with details given of their specificity and effective duration. Recommendations are made in particular that alcohol markers should be used in initial tests as well as in subsequent MPA tests.
