Abstract

The purpose of this project was to combine state-of-the-art detailed accident investigation procedures, computerized vehicle crash and occupant modelling, and biomechanical analysis of human injury causation into a method for obtaining greatly enhanced biomechanical data from vehicle crashes. Four accident cases, out of eighteen investigated, were selected for detailed reconstruction. Three were frontal impacts while the fourth was lateral. The CRASH II and MVMA2D analytical models were used in the reconstruction process. Biomechanical analysis of the predicted results led to the conclusion that such procedures, when used carefully, could estimate the level of force applied to vehicle occupants during accidents.
