Abstract

This brochure presents an overview of accident black spots in the Dutch province of North Brabant. Its purposes are: (1) to inform road administrators in the province of North Brabant of the junctions in their municipalities which have high accident rates; (2) to make clear that there are subsidy schemes to analyse and remove these dangerous junctions; and (3) to inform road administrators how they can find structural solutions to prevent black spots in their own area. The description of accident black spots is divided into seven regions. The junctions on which six or more injury or fatal accidents have occurred in the 1989-1991 period are classified by region. The number both of black spots and all the injury accidents occurred on them are also shown. Furthermore, the state of affairs at each black spot in December 1992 is noted. This includes measures which have already been or will be taken. It is also mentioned whether a junction has been a black spot in the periods 1987-1989 and 1988-1990. It appears that between 1989-1991, about 7%-8% of all the injury accidents in the province of North Brabant occurred on a black spot. Relatively, this is a large number, because black spots made up less than 8% of all the locations in North Brabant. This province contained 188 black spots on junctions, divided over 43 municipalities. Over the last few years, there has been a decrease in the number of both black spots and accidents occurring at these junctions. There were more injury accidents, and less accidents taken place on black spots in the 1989-1991 period than in 1987-1989.
