Abstract

By the end of this century, the production of diesel engines for passenger cars and light-duty trucks will increase by approximately 35-40%. In the coming years, diesel engine development will not only be considerably influenced by compliance with even more stringent emission control legislation, but also by demands for a severe reduction in fuel consumption. There are good chances of fulfilling the legal requirements, as well as the demands made by the market and the customer, due to the continuing development of the chamber engines (IDI), and in particular as a result of the use of high-speed direct-injection (DI) engines. It is expected that the share of DI engines in this market segment will increase to more than 30%. For the diesel engines, the sharper emission control legislation necessitates even more flexibility regarding engine management and engine adaptation. For DI engines, a considerably higher level of hydraulic performance will be required. The expected features of the new time-controlled pump systems have been confirmed during measurements taken on the injection-pump test bench and on the engine test bench.
