Building bricks for future proof local development plans. Land use plans have a long term effects. The ageing of the population requires that in the future more stringent demands will have to be met regarding reachability and accessibility of essential destinations for the elderly, especially those who don’t drive a car. At the moment these heavier demands are not yet a major consideration in the average development plan process. In the paper the following issues are dealt with: images of the quality needs regarding safe mobility of the elderly, lessons learnt from scenario prognosis studies, consequences for an actual local development plan (test case: Wijk bij Duurstede) and an impetus to a quality needs checklist. The CPB Bureau for economic policy analysis developed ‘4 futures of Europe’. As an annex the mobility consequences of these 4 futures for those lacking auto mobility will be highlighted. It seems sensible to allow for a worst-case scenario, i.c. ‘World Economy’. In that case concentration of essential services seems to be the best option. Such a concentration is also advantageous for supporting public transport. (Author/publisher)
