Abstract

The emergency medical service system and critical care centres established in Japan for the care of accident and acute disease victims are described. Head injury accounts for 74.5% of mortality from traffic accidents and the effects of traumatic forces on the brain are described. Surgical and critical care management for severe head injury is described, including immediate respiration and circulator management and CT scanning. Criteria for non-intervention are given.
