Brake activity of drivers and of an automatic brake system in simulated critical and non-critical driving scenarios.

Abstract

A behavioural validation of a driver support system with adaptive cruise control and anti-collision as support functions and brake interventions as only support mode was conducted in the IN-ARTE project (TR4014). In the present study the brake activity of the subject and the system respectively is analysed. The presence of the system resulted in a considerable increase in the number of brake events. Two traffic scenarios, an emergency scenario and a catch-up scenario, were selected for analysis of brake activity of the driver and the system. It was found that the drivers braked both in an early phase of a scenario (prior to brake-onset of a lead car) while the system, having a constant activation criterion based on a combination of headway and TTC, braked later. Moreover, at the onset of an overtaking manoeuvre some brake interventions were observed in supported trials, since in that situation drivers often exceeded the safety criterion of the system. The implication of driver support with a criterion for brake activation that conflicts with normal driver behaviour is shortly discussed. For the covering abstract see ITRD E113725 (C 22328 CD-ROM).
