Abstract

This article evaluates present-day brake systems and arrives at design requirements for systems capable of meeting future needs at a cost commensurate with performance. Systems analysis is used to establish dynamic axle loads, and optimized brake balances are derived. The relative complexities and advantages of electric, pneumatic, and hydraulic actuation systems are discussed.
