Abstract

Methods for predicting brake and brake system performance are described. Measures are defined by means of which the various facets of braking performance may be evaluated. This discussion is followed by an analysis of the mechanical friction brake, and equations are derived which allow calculation of the effectiveness of a given brake based upon brake geometry, type of actuation, and lining friction coefficient.
