Abstract

Breakaway devices in roadside structures such as light poles, sign supports and traffic signals have helped cut accident severity during the past ten years. Design and performance criteria for present models are still based on research and field performance data gathered by tests with a heavier car than the car of today, which has become less in weight and size. New specifications are wanted therefore.
